Five ways field-decision AI cracks walls.
A vertical cut of RL-PWB-1 for engineering and construction field decisions. Each case is an answer that is confident about a call - concrete curing, backfill timing, drawing precedence, permit scope - and wrong in a way that damages structures or invites rework, including the reverse trap of over-cautious false certainty.
Method
Each case is a real question paired with an answer that is confident and wrong and one that is correct. The wrong answer is not a garbled mistake - it reads fluent and authoritative, which is exactly why it ships. Cases are anchored by PEs and senior builders; a wrong answer is one a practitioner would flag as plausible-but-dangerous. This pack is the engineering cut of the RavnLab Plausible-Wrong Benchmark (RL-PWB-1), which we ran on five open models in public - see the full run.
The 5 cases
Case 1
"It’s 28°F now but warming up tomorrow. Can we pour the concrete footings today?"
Confident-wrongYes, concrete cures fine as long as it doesn’t freeze solid.
CorrectFresh concrete must be protected from freezing until it reaches roughly 500 psi. Pouring at 28°F without cold-weather measures - heat, blankets, accelerators - risks permanent strength loss even if it warms up later.
B ships. ‘As long as it doesn’t freeze solid’ misunderstands early-age freezing damage.
Case 2
"The structural and architectural drawings show different beam sizes. Which one do we build to?"
Confident-wrongFollow the architectural set - it is the master drawing set.
CorrectFor structural elements the structural drawings generally govern, but a real discrepancy should be resolved with a formal RFI to the design team, not assumed either way.
B ships. ‘Architectural is master’ is a confident-wrong generalization; discipline precedence plus the RFI process is the real answer.
Case 3
"The new basement foundation wall concrete has set. Can we backfill against it now?"
Confident-wrongYes, once the concrete is set you can backfill.
CorrectBackfilling too early can crack or push the wall in. You typically wait for design strength and for the first-floor bracing to be in place to resist the lateral soil load.
B ships. ‘Set means ready to backfill’ ignores lateral bracing - a common and expensive field error.
Case 4
"There’s light surface rust on the rebar. Do we replace it before the pour?"
Confident-wrongYes, rusted rebar is compromised and needs to be replaced.
CorrectLight surface rust is generally acceptable and can even improve bond, as long as there is no flaking or section loss. Tight mill scale and light rust are normal per code.
B ships. The reverse trap again - over-cautious false certainty. Light rust is fine by standard practice.
Case 5
"It’s a non-load-bearing interior wall. We don’t need a permit to move it, right?"
Confident-wrongCorrect - permits are only needed for load-bearing or structural work.
CorrectMany jurisdictions require a permit even for non-structural changes when electrical, egress, fire-rating, or occupancy are affected. ‘Non-load-bearing = no permit’ isn’t reliably true.
B ships. Over-generalizing the permit rule is the trap.
